He bravely fell on the battlefield,
A friend and comrade true, No fear of Death could make him yield, He fought for the red, white, and blue. Blin said, go on; don't mind me now, I feel that Death is nigh. The cold sweat stands upon my brow, Tell my comrades, good bye, good bye. |
He murmured not, Again he said,
Do you think we'll gain the day? Then closed his eyes, his soul had fled. In Death's cold arms he lay. T'was night when we dug his narrow grave, Upon that field of fame, And none lie there but the noble and brave, Who died for their Country's name. |
* Blin Harrington, who served with the 127th Regiment, Illinois, Volunteers, is the 2nd-great uncle to one of our tent members who was kind enough to share this wonderful tribute. This poem was penned by his comrades James Hummel and James Mead upon his death during a charge at Vicksburg, 19 May 1863.
